Q: What can I expect?
A: Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure. You’ll receive medication to help you relax, as well as a local anesthetic to eliminate any discomfort. Your doctor will discuss all the details with you at your pre-operative visit.
Upper eyelid surgery requires an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid. This crease follows the natural skin fold. From this incision, we can reduce excess fat and skin and adjust the eyelid’s symmetry. The hairline scars fade and become invisible within 6-8 weeks. Lower eyelid surgery requires an incision in the inner lining of the eyelid. From this incision, we remove excess fat that causes the “tired eye” look. Because of this location, sutures are unnecessary and there is no scarring.
Q: How do I know if it’s right for me?
A: An oculoplastic surgeon will give you a thorough exam and evaluate your age, skin condition, eye health, and other physical and medical factors.
Q: How long until I can go back to normal activity?
A: After surgery, you may experience some soreness and discomfort for which your doctor can prescribe pain medication. Because the eyelid skin is the thinnest skin of the body, it tends to swell and become discolored after surgery. Most people feel ready to go out in public and back to work in 7-10 days. The bruised appearance clears in 10-14 days.
